Notes
Note (1) "The Book of Dow" clearly states that Thoms Dow's origins are unknown and
that he is NOT the brother of Henry Dow in Hampton, MA (from Runham, England).
The book further indicates the nature of several failed attempts to identify
Thomas' origins.
Note (2) Residence in the Newburyport section on Greenleaf's Lane (now called State
Street) leading to Watt's Cellar.
Note (3) Admitted as a "freeman" by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony
Charter. This means that he had voting rights regarding magistrates and
deputies of the Court; not a mark of status with regard to servitude or slavery.
Note (4) Purchased from Richard Ormsby, for £250; 10 shillings paid with the bill of
sale. A house with 9 acres.
Note (5) Sold Newbury house to John Bartlett (delayed recording on 29 May 1660 - book
3, page 177 of Ipswich). Bought Haverhill house, with 9 acres, from Richard
Ormsby (delayed recording on 18 May 1662 - book 1, page 122 of Norfork) for 250
pounds and 10 shillings on 10 November 1653.
Note (6) First caucasian adult to die in Haverhill.
Note (7) Date that the sale of his property to John Bartlett was recorded. Obviously,
the actual sale had taken place several years earlier.
